He changed

We know that Jacob was a bit of a shyster,

his very name reveals him to be a “supplanter.”

Yet we see a different side of him after marriage.

He tells us that whenever something went amiss

with his father-in-law’s flocks,

he (Jacob) took the loss.

What was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you.

I bore the loss of it myself.

From my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.

Gen 31.39

On top of that he put up with all the unscrupulous nonsense

Laban (the same father-in-law) threw his way.

[Laban] has cheated me and changed my wages ten times.

But God did not permit him to harm me.

Gen 31.7

These twenty years I have been in your house.

I served you fourteen years for your two daughters,

and six years for your flock,

and you have changed my wages ten times.

Gen 31.41

I am not sure where I am going with this,

But I find it both interesting and encouraging.
