Scripture sometimes uses such extreme examples.

  • I should treat my wife as Jesus treats me. (Eph 5.25-28)

  • Our marriage should look like the relationship of Christ with His church. (Eph 5.31-32)

  • Forgive others just like Jesus has forgiven me (Col 3.13)

  • Jesus sends us out, just like His Father sent Him out (Jn 17.18; 20.21)

And here, Peter, explaining to me how I should let myself be taken advantage of and/or mistreated, uses the example of Jesus at the cross, to put the final nail in my coffin.

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.  He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.  He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree

1 Peter 2.21-24a

Extreme examples.

Because we are to be extreme people.
