John the Baptist must have lived every day wondering, wondering whether the fellow he was forerunning, was going to show up today.

In this way, John was somewhat like old Simeon in the temple.

Simeon had been promised he would one day lay his eyes on the promised One,

and when the young couple walked in 40 days after “no room in the inn”, he knew it was happening.

Similarly, John had been told that he would see the Spirit of God coming down on someone, and that someone would be the One.

So JB must have woken up every morning wondering if *this* would be the day.
