Sermon on the Mount

My first question as I reread the Sermon on the Mount is, who was Jesus talking to?

Of course I know He was directing His words to the multitudes because I have seen the photographs from that day. Oh, they are drawings? Hmmm. Nevertheless, we know that all the folks who draw and paint Bible scenes are true students of the scriptures and are sticklers to getting it right as they do their art.

Hmmm.

Verse one is rather ambiguous. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. Sounds to me like the Jesus I see in other pages of the Gospels, trying to get away from the crowds, looking for one-on-one time alone with Dad.

So just the twelve got to go.

Wait a minute. Do we even know there were still only 12 disciples at this point? We tend to treat the disciples as if they were eggs, there are always only a dozen of them.

But leaving that point aside, let’s jump to the end of the sermon, just before Jesus gives the altar call.

What?

Jesus did not do altar calls?

OK, then, no altar call.

He just gave an invitation, and quipped out, “I see that hand”.

No?

Again I utter a profound hmmm.
