Riding the wave

Scene: John 6

Twelve men in a boat in the middle of the night.

The sea is rough.

A ghost comes along, walking on the bumpy waves.

Hang on, I’m wrong, it’s Jesus!

After a short conversation, Jesus invited Peter over, with one of His famous “Come unto me’s.”

Perhaps when Peter started getting out of the boat Matthew shouted, “You got this, man!”

But maybe John was skeptical, “Peter, don’t do it! That foot you are stepping out of the boat with is the very same foot you are constantly putting in your mouth. Sit down and wise up, wise guy.”

Peter walked on the water. He didn’t do it as well as you or I would have done, but he did it.

I wonder if Mathew looked over at John and said, “You were wrong again, Johnny boy.”

And that is why, perhaps, Matt includes the part about Peter doing the wave while John leaves it out of his account.
