Jesus tells Ms. Sama to bring her husband.

“Cannot do,” she tells him. “I left that loser behind years ago.”

“Not only that,” Jesus responded, “you hitched up with four more fellows and then simply decided to be a modern woman and just move in with number six.”

But He said all that more gently than I write it. And He left it at that. He did not whip out the ten commandments and remind her that God said “Thou shalt not…”

We, these days, seem to want to address people’s behavior—drinking, drugs, abortion, promiscuity, perversion. I do not see Jesus doing that. He’s aiming for people’s hearts, touching upon their hunger. People don’t need one more person to tell them they are sinners. They are in need of someone with compassion coming up alongside of them, showing them God’s mercy, sharing God’s grace, being God’s love.

That’s what I am, “just thinking.”
